Whether their name is Winnie the Pooh, Smokey, Yogi, Fozzie, just plain ole Buddy, or Paddington; teddy bears in their myriad of names and looks are as essential to life as breathing.
And the biggest award winning musical at the Olivier Awards in London was the story told the story of a marmalade eating bear from the darkest of Peru – Paddington.
“Paddington The Musical” earned eleven nominations and took home seven awards at the Olivier Awards. And in his acceptance speech for Best Director, Luke Sheppard said that he would like to see “Paddington The Musical” travel.
That wish may be coming true with the musical currently looking at crossing the pond to land on Broadway as a part of the 2027 season.
Producer Sonia Friedman noted, “look, it’s going to happen, I can’t kid you, but we have to look at the costs. Broadway is expensive, prohibitively so in some instances… I’d like it to be next year to keep the momentum going.”
The musical was adapted from the stories of Paddington creator Michael Bond.
Paddington was the first “passenger” to travel the Chunnel Tunnel in 1994; appeared in numerous books, films, and television programs; and has had tea and marmalade sandwiches with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
