The biggest night in Hollywood celebrates the annual Academy Awards with the presentation of the Oscars. Conan O’Brien returns to host the 98th annual event.
O’Brien noted that the nominees come from 31 countries across six continents.
The first award of the night was for Best Supporting Actress and went to Amy Madigan for her role in “Weapons”.
The award for Best Animated Feature went to “KPOP Demon Hunters”.
The award for Best Animated Short Film went to “The Girl Who Cried Pearls”.
The award for Best Achievement in Costume Design went to Kate Hawley for “Frankenstein”.
The award for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling went to Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, and Cliona Furey for “Frankenstein”.
The inaugural award for Best Achievement in Casting goes to Cassandra Kulukundis for “One Battle After Another”.
The award for Best Live Action Short Film was a tie and went to Sam A. Davis and Jack Piatt for “The Singers” and Alexandre Singh and Natalie Musteata for “Two People Exchanging Saliva”.
The award for Best Supporting Actor goes to Sean Penn for his role in “One Battle After Another”. Penn was not present at the ceremony.
The award for Best Writing for an Adapted Screenplay goes to Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another”. This is Anderson’s first Oscar win.
The award for Best Writing for an Original Screenplay goes to Ryan Coogler for “Sinners”. This is Coogler’s first Oscar win.
Billy Crystal spoke on Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle before the annual In Memoria-m segment aired. Diane Keaton and Robert Redford also received tributes.
The award for Best Achievement in Production Design goes to Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau for “Frankenstein”. This is a first Oscar win for Tamara.
The award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects goes to Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon, and Daniel Barrett for “Avatar: Fire and Ash”.
Presenting the award for documentaries, Jimmy Kimmel noted that making a film that could get you killed was real courage.
The award for Short Film Documentary goes to “All the Empty Rooms”.
The award for Feature Documentary Film goes to “Mr. Nobody Against Putin”.
The award for Best Original Music Score goes to Ludwig Goransson for “Sinners”.
The award for Best Achievement in Sound goes to Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo, and Juaan Peralta for “F1”.
The award for Best Achievement in Film Editing goes to Andy Jurgensen for “One Battle After Another”.
The award for Best Achievement in Cinematography goes to Autumn Durald Arkapaw for “Sinners”.
The award for Best International Feature Film goes to “Sentimental Value” from Norway.
Lionel Richie presented the award for Best Original Song for a Film to EJAE, Mark Somenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Heong Hoon Seo, and Teddy Park for “Golden” from the animated film “KPOP Demon Hunters”. This is the first KPOP song to win the Oscar for Original Song and it is the first Oscar for the songwriters.
The award for Best Direction of a Film goes to Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another”.
The award for Best Leading Actor goes to Michael B. Jordan for his role in “Sinners”. He received a standing ovation and loud cheers when he took the stage. Jordan said that his father came in from Ghana to be there.
The award for Best Leading Actress goes to Jessie Buckley for her role in “Hamnet”. This is her first Oscar win.
In the final award of the night, the award for Best Picture goes to “One Battle After Another”. The film won six of its 14 nominations.
