Jonathan Groff has played the role of Bobby Darin in the hit musical “Just in Time” since the show began March 31, 2025. He will be taking a break from that role on March 29.
But Groff will not be idle. He will be making his debut with the Royal Shakespeare Company this fall in the traditional all male performance of “As You Like It”.
In Shakespeare’s day only men were allowed to be actors and performed both male and female roles. The acronym DRAG originated during that time…it stood for Doing Role As a Girl.
And the Tony Award winning Groff will indeed be doing the role in DRAG as he is scheduled to portray Rosalind in the comedy set to run September 26 to November 7 at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. The official opening date is October 6.
Daniel Evans will be directing the production.
Other productions scheduled for the 2026-27 RSC season include “Game of Thrones: The Mad King”, an all female production of “Julius Caesar” set in a women’s prison, “Middlemarch” by George Eliot, and a new take on “The Three Muskateers”.
Royal Shakespeare Company Artistic Directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey spoke on the upcoming season via statement saying, “from the sweet-natured romance of ‘As You Like It’to the righteous anger of Phyllida Lloyd’s ‘Julius Caesar’, the anarchic adventures of ‘The Three Musketeers’ to the sweeping societal shifts of George Eliot’s ‘Middlemarch’, themes of identity, transformation, freedom, justice, and the liberation that comes from breaking free of expectations loom large this autumn, as classic stories and universal struggles take on powerful new resonance in the hands of some of the most exciting artists of today.”
