Team Canada and Team USA proved once again that they are a powerhouse when it comes to playing hockey.
The game may be the national pastime in Canada, but the USA is coming on strong.
In the men’s Olympic hockey tournament, Canada and the USA are in the semifinals and could possibly face off one more time in a battle for the gold medal.
But first, it’s up to the women…
Team Canada and Team USA face off for the eighth time in a battle for the gold medal. But this one is about more than just a game.
Team USA’s Hillary Knight is the only American hockey player – male and female – to play in five Olympics. Plus she was in position to become the highest scoring American and needed just one more goal to break the tie.
Team Canada scored in the first period on a Team USA power play.
That score of 1-0 stood until two minutes and four seconds remaining in the third period when Hillary Knight tied the game and set the scoring record with 15 career goals to send the game into overtime.
Four minutes into overtime, Megan Keller scored the winning goal to send Team USA and the arena into a frenzy. The ice was covered in hats, gloves, and sticks as the women celebrated their gold medal win – the third for Team USA Olympic teams.
The gold medal overtime win came just one day after Hillary Knight proposed to her girlfriend speedskater Brittany Bowe in the Olympic Village…and she said yes!
