Yes, but it was…and is…on purpose.
I have an electric three-wheel bike that I use around the neighbourhood…when it isn’t buried in snow. 🙂
The law says that bike riders are to follow the same rules as motor vehicles. Problem is, those motor vehicle drivers don’t respect anyone else on the road.
I live on a one-way street heading north. The sidewalks are atrocious, so I will ride on the street; but it isn’t one of the busy roads so I’m ok with that.
However, coming back home, sometimes if the route involves heading down that one-way street the wrong way…I will. At least that way, I can see the cars coming at me.
When it comes to the busier streets, I hit the sidewalks. I am not a speed demon on wheels; I go slow so I can stop in plenty of time when someone is walking on the sidewalk. I will stop and wait for them to pass.
For me, safety is more important than what it says in the driver’s handbook.
Over the summer when the kids are out of school, it seemed like there was an article in the news about a wreck involving a bicycle, electric bike, and even motorbikes. Granted some of them were because the bike riders were reckless and didn’t pay attention; but there were some wrecks because the drivers weren’t paying attention to the road either. If I’m not on the busy streets with all that crazy traffic then I don’t have to worry about the crazy drivers.
When I was little my dad would take us on bike rides sometimes after dinner. He always stressed safety…and if being safe meant riding on the sidewalk, then that’s what you did.
Fortunately, driving cars and trucks on the sidewalks are not allowed like they do in Russia.
