Jinks Monsoon is not the only “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winning alum to find success on Broadway.
Bianca Del Rio is making her Off-Broadway debut in “Tartuffe”.
While she has appeared in numerous roles in the United Kingdom and Los Angeles, this is not the first time Del Rio has been on Broadway. Previously, she was a costumer.
Del Rio portrays Madame Pernelle in the Lucas Hnath’s adaptation of “Tartuffe” which is set to run through January 24. The official opening for the sow at the New York Theatre Workshop on December 16.
Del Rio spoke on her return to New York City after an extended absence saying, “I lived in New York for many years. This is my first time back in the city in about 10 years, for any real length of time. When I’m touring on the road, I’ve come in and done a show or two, but it is so nice to actually be back for a significant spell.”
On making her Off-Broadway debut Del Rio noted, “I said yes before I even know what was going on. It’s been a big excitement. The process has been so much fun.”
Madame Pernelle is the outspoken stubborn mother of Orgon. “Equal parts grating and guffaw-inducing, she is Elmire’s mother-in-law from hell, and the most devoted follower of the con-man Tartuffe.” Del Rio said, “I would like to tell you that it’s so far from who I am, that it’s rather difficult—but it’s really easy. The advantage, I think, is that she is a heightened character with a very strong opinion, which I can relate to in my drag career. It’s not that far from who I am on stage as Bianca, so I’m not shocked by it, nor am I afraid of it. Now, it is a lot of dialogue, but once I have the words down, it’s not that much of a stretch.”
“Tartuffe” was originally performed in 1644 with Louis Béjart playing the role of Madame Pernelle. In that time all roles were played by male actors with the designation D R A G ( doing role as a girl) for the female roles.
Matthew Broderick, David Cross, Emily Davis, Amber Gray, Ryan J. Haddad, Francis Jue, Lisa Kron, and Ikechukwu Ufomadu also star in the show.
A native of New Orleans, Del Rio moved to New York City after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Delta area around the Gulf of Mexico.
