Game three of the 2025 World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers was one for the record and history books.
It was the second time in World Series history that a game went 18 innings – that’s two whole games in one – but this time, the game lasted six hours and 39 minutes! A total of 609 pitches were thrown in the game.
Originally MLB “rubbed up” 290 baseballs for the game. After 230 of those balls had been used, they quickly worked to get more balls ready for play.
Los Angeles Dodgers player Shohei Ohtani made some history of his own by going to the plate NINE times with five intentional walks, two doubles, and two home runs. No player has ever made nine plate appearances in a single game. After hitting a home run, two doubles, and a second home run; the Blue Jays refused to throw any pitchers to the Japanese born player. He is only the second player in MLB history to have four extra base hits in a playoff game – the last time was 1906.
And for the second year in a row, Freddi Freeman hit a walk off home run in a World Series game to end the game with a 6-5 Dodger win.
The Dodgers have had pitching issues all season long due to numerous injuries; but with every pitcher in the bull pen getting a chance to pitch; the Dodger pitching staff did not allow a run from the seventh inning on!
After pitching a full nine inning game the night before, Yoshinobu Yamamoto went to manager Dave Roberts and volunteered to pitch. He was in the bull pen warming up when Freeman hit the winning home run.
A total of 19 pitchers were used in the game.
