The definition of an MVP – Most Valuable Player – means something different to everyone.
But sometimes critics, writers, and committee members can agree on who is truly the best.
Las Vegas Aces player A’ja Wilson has proven her worthiness as a player in the WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association – by winning the leagues MVP…not just once or twice, but FOUR times! She is the only player to earn the award four times.
Currently in the WNBA playoffs against Indiana, Wilson spoke on the award saying, “it’s not going to hit me until the end of the season honestly; it is truly a blessing to be where I am. I don’t think I could ever put into words how special this moment is. My name is in the history books forever.”
Winning the award for the second year in a row, Wilson led the league in scoring with an average of 23.4 points per game, blocked shot at 2.3 per game, and helped the Aces to make the playoffs.
Aces coach Becky Hammon spoke on the 29-year-old Wilson saying, “the fact she’s not even 30 yet is crazy. She still has a lot left in the tank. There’s still areas that she knows she can improve in and she will. Every year she’s coming back and adding something different to her game. Everyone talks about the Mount Rushmore of basketball faces. … There’s no Mount Rushmore, you’re the only one, you’re Everest.”
WNBA Commission Cathy Engelbert and Wilson’s boyfriend Bam Adebayo (who plays for the NBA Miami Heat” presented the award to Wilson after practice last Friday.
Wilson said, “it hasn’t been easy for us, they counted us out. They wrote us all off, but we showed up every single day. We worked our (butts) off. … It has my name on it, but it’s all of us. There is no (award) without each and every last one of you guys.”
Wilson also shares the Defensive Player of the Year honours with Alanna Smith of the Minnesota Lynz for her third win.
Quickly filling up her trophy room, Wilson has also own the AP Player of the Year award.
