The game last week between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs was a hard fought game that resulted in more than points on the scoreboard.
Players on both sides of the ball received fines for actions on the gridiron.
While the Eagles were on offense, Saquon Barkley lowered his head and rammed his helmet into Chiefs defensive back Charmarri Conner. Officials missed the call at the time but the NFL didn’t. Calling the move an unnecessary roughness move, the NFL has fined Barkley $46,371 for the move.
The fine is equivalent to what the NFL would assess for a second offense; Barkley was fined for the same action last season.
After making a 23 yard catch, Travis Kelce paid homage to the baseball film “Major League”. The NFL deemed the action offensive and has fined him $14,491 for making an “obscene gesture” which is equal to a first offensive for an unsportsmanlike conduct call which was not called during the game.
The two plays were not the only penalties missed during the game when the officials missed a false start in the fourth quarter.
This year the NFL has been cracking down on actions deemed unsportsmanlike conduct. So far this year Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Carter and New York Jets’ Will McDonald have also been fined for unsportsmanlike conduct moves.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the NFL has handed down $222,421 in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties this season.
