What would your life be like without music?

Honestly, I can’t imagine my life without music.

To me, that would be a nightmare.

I know that there are religions that don’t allow music, but that is something that I just cannot comprehend. Doesn’t it say in the Bible to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord”. Isn’t music joyful – a joyful noise?

I just happened to remember an episode of “Quantum Leap” where Sam leaps into a Chip ‘n Dale dancer to try and save a young girl who is deaf and dreams of being a dancer. Sam asks her about hearing and she goes into a dialogue about “hearing” the wind as it blows across her face and the leaves as they rustle from that wind; and how she can feel the beat of the music.

Music is more than the notes struck, plucked, or blown with an instrument; it surrounds us everywhere as the wind as it rustles through the trees, even the sound of horns of cars, feet as they hit the pavement, and even the rubber of tires rolling down the road. The crack of a bat as it meets the leather of the ball or a foot kicking the ball and the doink as it impacts the goal posts.

We often think of music as structured notes that can be drawn on a piece of manuscript paper; but music is all around us. Without it there would be only silence…the silence of death!
