Daily writing prompt
What is a word you feel that too many people use?

To me, it isn’t just one word but a whole list of them…and all of them profane.

Record companies have had to resort to labeling songs and albums letting people know when the song’s lyrics use profanity.

There are hundred of books whose authors insist on page after page of profane dialog.

Every day you hear people walking down the street talking on their phones or to another person and literally every other word is F this and F that.

I knew someone who used a great deal of profanity and she had a baby. I told her that the first word out of her baby’s mouth would be a cuss word…and it was!

I once read that a person who uses a great deal of profanity does so because they do not have a good grasp on the language. I used to wonder how true that statement was…now I’m beginning to believe it.

One of my favourite authors is Alistair MacLean and one of the reasons I enjoy reading his books so much – besides the fact he keeps you guessing until the end – is that he has found a creative way to avoid profanity in his books. Admittedly, there are a few words here and there but nothing outlandish.

When he has a character who uses profanity he either says, “he carried on a dialog that was unprintable” or “he cussed for five minutes and never used the same word twice.” Either way the reader has a full understanding of the character at that moment. (And in case you were wondering, he uses the same technique for violent acts.)

Why is there such a desire or need to be sailing profane words all over the place??? It doesn’t make someone “cool” and certainly doesn’t exude intelligence; so what’s the deal?

There was a time where a gentleman would never use “bad language” in front of a lady; nowadays, some of the women are worse than the men.

When we were kids, profanity was not allowed – the old wash your mouth out with soap rule. Having been in the military the brothers are making up for lost time; on the other hand, I refrain from the use as a general rule…unless I get really angry, then a few words will pop out…bloody devil comes to mind :).

I will admit to using a certain smiling brown emoji once or twice.
