After an absence of nearly 20 years, the Xfinity Series returns to Mexico City for some road course racing at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

Travel issues caused some changes in the schedule and moved all activities to Saturday and an early morning practice session and qualifying.

The teams have an additional challenge this weekend with Mexico City sitting over seven thousand feet above sea level, resulting in thinner air.  The atmospheric conditions not only effect the breathing of the drivers but the cars as well since the cars also depend on air to run properly.  Thinner air means less horse power, less, drag, and brakes that are not as cool.  NASCAR gave the teams a choice of three different gears for the race and some crews have made gear changes to maximize efficiency.

There are 39 drivers entered in the race including Cup Series drivers Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs, and fan favourite the Mexican born Daniel Suarez.

Anthony Alfredo got loose and spun through the grass before hitting the wall and had to have his car towed back to the garage.

Spotters are reporting some squirrels around the track and are telling the drivers to keep any eye out while they practice and try to get familiar with the course.

Not only is Connor Zilisch leading the field in practice, he is over a second faster than any other driver including the Cup Series drivers.

A heavy braking zone, turn four is a big problem for the drivers with many of them missing the turn.

Group qualifying follows practice with a very short break for adjustments and tire changes.  The drivers are divided into two groups and will have 20 minutes to make a qualifying run.

Bad weather has moved close to the track and NASCAR has adjusted qualifying to a single group 40 minute run.

Daniel Suarez says that he is living a dream this weekend and expects to have “a few hundred” friends and family at the track for both races.

Six of the 12 playoff spots are locked up with race wins from Justin Allgaier, Austin Hill, Connor Zilisch, Jesse Love, Sammy Smith, and Brandon Jones.

Sam Mayer who has won four of the past eleven road course races says that it is “cool” to be there and “very special”.

Connor Zilisch said that it was “cool to learn the track”; adding that it was special to be there at the track in Mexico City.

William Sawalich is the first driver to get on the course for a qualifying run and posted a time of 93.923 seconds.

Christian Eckes spins out in turn four while making his qualifying run but kept the car away from the wall.

Daniel Suarez missed the turn and crashes his car deep into the tire wall but gets it out and moving again.

NASCAR has stopped qualifying while they make repairs to the barrier.

After a short break, the cars are back on the track again for the final 20 minutes of qualifying.

Out of the care center, Daniel Suarez said that there was an issue with the brakes; adding “my bad”.  Saying that they will be fine, he calls JRM a “top notch team”.

Mexico City native Andres Perez is making his Xfinity Series debut in today’s race.

With a time of 92.372 seconds, Connor Zilisch put his number 88 JR Motorsports car on the pole for the fourth time this season.  Joe Gibbs Racing driver Ty Gibbs will start alongside on the front row.

At just 18 years old, Connor Zilisch is the youngest driver to be the fastest driver to reach five career poles.
