In just over a week and a half the annual Tony Awards will be presented by the Broadway League or the American Theatre Wing.
But, what’s it all about???
After a 62 member committee has made the nominations, 831 body of industry professional voters will watch, re-watch, and vote for the Best on Broadway for the June 8 ceremonies.
In a “peek behind the curtain”, a Tony Award voter anonymously tells “Playbill” how it’s all done.
Tony Award voters serve a three-year term and are invited to do so.
Voters must see every nominated performance at least once and have less than a month to do so. And there are always a show or two that has closed before the voting widow has opened which makes things a bit difficult for the voters.
Of course, each voter has their own opinions of what is the best and which categories are more to their area of expertise.
Previously votes were cast via a paper ballot; now they are done electronically.
Tony voters may get little gifts form some of the shows but there are no big “swag bags” filled with goodies.
