Do you have any collections?
Does music count???
Unfortunately my musical collection has decreased somewhat over the years due to theft. My collection of vinyl albums is about half of what it used to be, but I do have quite a collection of CD’s.
But I must quantify that by saying, some of them I have indeed bought…Record Archive was very helpful in helping me build that collection with their $5 CD’s :). But a good number of my CD collection has come from the artists themselves – promo CD’s and even a few gifts.
As a music journalist, I have been given advance copies of upcoming albums to listen to and review. For a time I volunteer my services as an album/CD reviewer for a couple of publications.
There are some of the CD’s in my collection that were advanced copies given to me as a part of an interview for the upcoming release of the new album.
And I have had a few artists who have given me a CD or two as a gift after covering one of their shows and/or an interview.
Currently my CD collection is estimated to top the 700 mark and fills more than three five tier shelves – one of them on both sides of the shelf.
After my recent move, it took me several days to assemble the shelves and place every CD in alphabetical order. I prefer that to stacking them according to genre; it makes the desired CD much easier to find.
More recently the musical collection includes digital downloads. I must admit that have several hundred songs available on my phone or other device is much easier to carry around and have at my fingertips when not at home. And let’s face it, finding turntables and CD players are somewhat difficult to find. Computers don’t even come with CD players anymore. And it sure is easier to press the music app on my phone to play some tunes when I take a shower. 🙂 I have the player on shuffle, so I never know which of the 971 songs will come up next.
And well, artists and record companies are sending album releases via digital files. I have some of those as well.
Sorry to say the rather large collection of cassette tapes did not make the move.
I’m not sure if it is considered a collection but I have a five drawer file cabinet stuffed with files from interviews and press releases I used for writing articles over the years. And boxes filled with copies of my writing and journals I have written.
There’s another file cabinet filled with sheet music…the music that isn’t scattered all over the keyboard and music stand. And that doesn’t count the apps on my ipad with dozens more pieces of music.
I guess you could say that I have collections but they are centered around my life as a journalist and music enthusiast.

I have a cd collection that I love like crazy. Every one gets played on a regular basis. There’s something special about hearing a particular song and instantly being taken back down memory lane.
