In 2023, the Broadway production of the “Phantom of the Opera” closed after 35 years!
It’s creator Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber noted that HE (the Opera Ghost) was not pleased saying, “He wasn’t happy about the closure of his legend on Broadway. He did intimate that he might be moving to what he feels is a better address in New York, in a better area.”
Could that “better area” be 218 W 57th St??? Formerly Lee’s Art Shop, the front windows are covered in broadsheets about the Paris Opera House. And a website has popped up – Masquerade has been launched.
There have been a number of rumours about the show’s return over the past year; perhaps even as an immersive production of the show. But so far there have been no official dates announced.
But according to Lord Webber, “He’s back!”.
A national tour of the show will begin in November.
When “Phantom of the Opera” debuted on Broadway in 1988, it took home seven Tony Awards including Best Musical. “Phantom” holds the record for the longest running show on Broadway with 13,981 performances.
The show can still be seen on the West End in London.
