If you could be a character from a book or film, who would you be? Why?
I am an avid reader; but a picky one. I love a good spy novel, counterespionage tales, and books that place fictional characters into realistic situations. But, I don’t think I would really like to be any one of the characters in those books.
However, there are a few characters from television series that I wouldn’t mind; not because they are so great but because of what they were…Nicholas Knight of “Forever Knight:, Henry Morgan of “Forever”, , John Amsterdam of “New Amsterdam”, and Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod of “Highlander”.
All of these characters were immortals. The vampire part of Nick Knight doesn’t really draw me in but the fact that of the four men I named, he is the oldest – brought across in 1228. Henry Morgan is the youngest at only 200.
But can you imagine the history they have witnessed over the years? It is one thing to read about history, but to actually LIVE it would be something really great!
An 800 year old vampire who incidentally doesn’t want to be a vampire anymore, Nick Knight has seen book printing go from handwritten works by monks to Guttenberg’s printing press to mass production by computers.
He has met many of the world’s greatest artists and even worked with some of them.
When Nick was still a human, music was just getting its footing in the world. Imagine all the master composers and the numerous musical evolutions that have taken place in the past 800 years? In the show, Nick plays the piano – he has a grand piano in his home.
In “New Amsterdam” – a short lived show due to a writer’s strike – John became immortal after being stabbed through the heart and treated by a Native Shaman in what is now New York City but in the early 1600’s was filled with Native Americans and the Dutch. In the show, he often speaks of New York’s past, its neighbourhoods and history.
In “Forever Knight”, “Forever”, “New Amsterdam”, and “Highlander” there are flashes of history in every episode. Something from the main character’s life is reflected in whatever current event is a part of the current episode.
In “Forever”, Henry can die but he comes back to life. After each death he comes back naked and in the water.
The “Highlander” Duncan MacLeod can die and come back to life unless someone takes his head.
Each episode is filled with pieces of history that make history interesting. It might be fun to make a romp through the past and take a look around.
