Last May Tallahassee was ravaged by tornadoes. Among the areas devastated by the twisters were the home of the FSU Seminole baseball team – Dick Howser Stadium’s Mike Martin Field and the Circus facilities.
While the baseball field sustained relatively minor damage – a torn fence and damage to the scoreboard; the FSU Flying High Circus grounds were destroyed. The Circus tent was completely demolished.
Temporary repairs were made to the baseball grounds so that the 2024 season could conclude with final repairs made during the off season. But the Flying High Circus would need a great deal of work including a new tent.
While the annual Home Show performances have been cancelled, the concrete floor has been laid and the new tent is on its way from Italy.
Once the tent arrives later this month, repairs should be completed in time for the performers to rehearse their acts in time for the fall performances.
To date, repairs to the Flying High Circus are nearly $1 million.
Founded in 1947, the only accredited circus program in the United States, the Flying High Circus offers students an opportunity to live out their dream of being in the circus. The Flying High Circus offers juggling, trapeze, high wire, skating, and trampoline acts – no animals. Students learn to do their own rigging and give performances.
The Circus does not receive money but generates its own revenue via the performances.
Fundraising efforts for the Flying High Circus recovery and repairs is ongoing. Donations can be made by visiting www.circus.fsu.edu/support-us.
