The fall out that has resulted from the recent hostile takeover of The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. continues as more shows are cancelled under the guise of “financial circumstances”.
The annual performance by the Washington, D.C. Gay Men’s Chorus has been eliminated from the Kennedy Center schedule; and now the play “Eureka Day” – which recently finished a run on Broadway – has also been cancelled.
The two productions join the children’s musical “Finn” which was cancelled by the Center; as well as, comedian Issa Rae and the band Low Cut Connie who cancelled their shows after the take over in protest.
Throughout its history, the Kennedy Center board has been comprised equally of Democratic and Republican members. It is now filled with Republicans after the White House administration ousted all Democratic appointees. The chair of the board was also fired.
In the wake of the take over artistic directors Renee Fleming, Ben Folds, and Shonda Rhimes all resigned their positions.
New head of the board Richard Grenell recently noted a “big change” would be coming in the form of a “huge celebration of the birth of Christ at Christmas”.
