On January 23 the Film Academy released the nominees for the 97th annual Oscars after a dealy due to the wildfires in southern California.  “The musical “Emilia Perez” leads the list of nominees with 13; missing tying the record by one.

Among the 13 nominations was a Best Actress nomination for Karla Sofia Gascon, making her the first ever openly trans actor to earn an Oscar nomination.

“Wicked” and “The Brutalist” also earned numerous nominations with 10 each.  “Conclave” and “A Complete Unknown” also garnered multiple nominations.

“No Other Land” made the nomination list despite getting no U.S. distribution.  The film about daily life under Israeli occupation was made by an Israeli-Palestinian collective.

But the list of nominees also included some glaring omissions in no nominations for Selena Gomez, Pamela Anderson, “Queer”, and “Challengers”.

The gala event is being held on March 2 and is hosted by Conan O’Brien this year.  One big change is there will be no performances from the Original Song category this year.
