Over the past month, several Broadway productions have closed; but theater fans, there are plenty of new shows on the way over the coming months.
Making the move from Off-Broadway to Broadway, the play “English” began previews on January 3 with an official opening on January 23.
The musical “Redwood” opens previews January 24 with an official opening on February 13. The musical marks the return to Broadway for Idina Menzel.
Making the move across the pond from the West End, the Olivier Award winning musical “Operation Mincemeat” will preview beginning February 15 with an official opening on March 20.
After playing on Off-Broadway, the musical “Buena Vista Social Club” come to Broadway with previews beginning February 21 and an official opening on March 19. The musical is based on the Grammy Award winning album of the same name.
With Denzel Washington in the starring role, “Othello” will debut on previews February 24 with an official opening on March 23. Jake Gyllenhaal and Molly Osborne also star in the Shakespearian play.
After a sold out premiere in Chicago, the Phylicia Rashad directed play “Purpose” comes to Broadway with previews on February 25 and an official opening on March 17.
The dark comedy “Celino v. Ross” is about to close, but the play about “cutthroat” real estate agents “Glengarry Glen Ross” is set to open with previews on March 10 and an official opening on March 31.
In a adaptation of the Oscar Wilde book, award winning actor Sarah Snook portrays 26 characters in “The Picture of Dorian Gray” which is set for previews on March 10 and an official opening on March 27.
After a great deal of speculation, “Boop! The Betty Boop Musical” opens to previews on March 11 with an official opening on April 5. The musical is based on the carton character with music by David Foster.
A stage incarnation of the TV series, “SMASH” makes it debut on March 11 with an official opening on April 10.
Making his Broadway debut, George Clooney stars in “Good Night, and Good Luck” in the stage adaptation of the film on Edward R. Murrow’s tirade against Senator Joseph McCarthy. Previews open March 12 with an official opening April 3.
“The Last Five Years” makes its Broadway debut in preview on March 18 and an official opening on April 6. The musical is about two New Yorkers falling in love.
After numerous regional theater performances, “John Proctor is the Villain” comes to Broadway with previews on March 20 and an opening on April 14. The play is about a high school English class questioning “The Crucible”.
Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga star in the Stephen Sondheim musical “Old Friends” which opens to previews on March 25 and an official opening on April 8.
Based on the true story of a man trapped in a cave, “Floyd Collins” makes its Broadway debut with previews on March 27 and an opening on April 21.
The next in a line of bio musicals, “Just in Time” is the story of singer Bobby Darin where the theater becomes a nightclub.
After an Olivier Award winning performance on the West End, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” comes to Broadway on March 28 with an official opening on April 22. The musical is the prequal to the hit Netflix series.
Inspired by the film, “Real Women Have Curves” comes to Broadway as a new musical with a preview on April 1 and an opening on April 27.
After a 40 year absence, a new jazz infused adaptation of the “Pirates! The Penzance Musical” premieres on Broadway April 4 with an official opening April 24.
