The film adaptation of “Wicked” is far from the first Broadway musical to find success at the movie theatres, but it is the most successful to date earning well over $500 million in global box office receipts.
In the week before Christmas, the Broadway production of “Wicked” brought in over $3 million.
In the six weeks since its November 22 debut, “Wicked” the film has grossed $634,378,535 in global box office draws – $424,230,535 of that domestically. The film has far surpassed its $150 million price tag.
The film which will be available for home viewing December 31 stars award-winning performers Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
The second part of the film – titled “Wicked: For Good” – will make its theatrical debut on November 21, 2025.
The numbers top that of the 2008 film adaptation of “Mama Mia” starring Meryl Streep which brought in $610,0002,542.
The numbers do not reflect any adjustments for inflation; however, if they did the $159,484,051 brought in for “The Sound of Music” starring Julie Andrews in 1965 would equate to $1.3 billion today.
