Showing no signs of slowing down, an 82 year old Sir Paul McCartney has won numerous awards on both sides of the pond. His latest honour is having a series of coins minted in his honour from the Royal Mint.
The coin features a signature design that includes his Höfne bass, “magic piano”, piano notes, the Wings logo, and his name.. The £5 Brillian Uncirculated Coin sells for £15.50. A colourful version of the coin has a limited edition release of 10,000 pieces and sells for £29.50. And the Gold Proof edition of the coin is limited to 1,000 pieces and sells for £99.50.
A one ounce Silver Proof Colour edition of the coin is also being made available but is limited to 5,000 pieces and sells for £118,00. The five ounce Silver Proof Coin is limited to 500 pieces and sells for £520.00.
Limited editions of a ¼ ounce Gold Proof Coin, two ounce Silver Proof, a one ounce Gold Proof, and a two ounce Gold Proof coins are also available for purchase.
The first time a coin is being made available, Sir Paul spoke on the honour saying, “this feels like a hug honour. It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.”
Not included in the coins for sale, the Royal Mint is creating a guitar pick shaped coin as a gift to Sir Paul who used pennies as a pick in his early days as a musician.
The Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint Rebecca Morgan spoke on the new issue saying, “our coins recognise the greatest icons and events in British history, so it’s fitting that Paul McCartney’s remarkable music career is now celebrated on an official UK coin. What makes this coin extra special is that Paul has been involved throughout the design process. The coin celebrates elements from throughout his solo career, and we hope fans will enjoy the layered references
to songs, instruments and bands.”
Next year the Royal Mint will be offering fans a chance to own a piece of history when they auction off a signed gold edition of Sir Paul’s coin which weighs five kilos and took over 250 hours to make. Four silver five kilo editions of the coin will also be auctioned off.
