Twelve drivers become eight as the Cup Series drivers take on the newly configured Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America Roval 400.

Thirty-eight teams have brought cars to Charlotte Motor Speedway and The Roval.

A home race for many of the teams, the stands will be filled with shop crews, friends, and family.

Turns five, six, seven, and eight have been reconfigured to now include a hair pin turn back onto the oval; but the course still includes 17 turns.  And the turtles are back…sending drivers into the air as they pass over them.

A cutoff race to end round two of the playoffs, William Byron is the only driver that knows he will be in the next round of the playoffs with only five races remaining in the 2024 racing season.

The drivers have been divided into two groups for two 20 minute practice sessions before qualifying.

Breast cancer awareness month, the pink window nets are back.  After the race the drivers will autograph them and the pink window nets will be auctioned for charity.

After both groups of drivers have completed their first of two practice runs, AJ Allmendinger topped the list with Shane van Gisbergen in sixth.  Allmendinger and van Gisbergen are “doing the double” this weekend, driving in both the Xfinity and Cup Series races.  Josh Bilicki is also “doing the double”.

Alex Bowman has to come down pit road with radio issues.  He cannot hear the crew.

Austin Dillon tops the leaderboard from Group A with Shan van Gisbergen topping the list from Group B.

The drivers maintain their groups for qualifying with the top five drivers from each group moving on to a second round of qualifying to set the pole.

Chase Elliott is the first driver out on the track and to make a qualifying run and posted a time of 83.051 seconds.

Tyler Reddick is the first driver to bread the 83 second mark with a time of 82.715 seconds.

Tyler Reddick, Chase Elliott, Bubba Wallace, AJ Allmendinger, and Joey Logano will all be moving on to round two of qualifying from Group A.

In Group A, Tyler Reddick was the only driver to make a run in the 82 second mark; in Group B, four of them have made runs in the 82 second mark.

From Group B Shane van Gisbergen, Kyle Larson, Austin Cindric, William Byron, and Brad Keselowski will be moving on to round two of qualifying.

Kyle Larson is the first driver of the top 10 to make a qualifying run and posted a time of 83.330.

With a time of 82.704 Shane van Gisbergen sweeps the poles.  The other driver to break the 82 second mark, Tyler Reddick will start on the front row alongside van Gisbergen.

Overnight track officials have lowered the height of the blue turtles.  Drivers complained of the severity of the impact after jumping the “turtles” during practice.  As a result, the “turtles” have been lowered from four inches to 2.5 inches.

Stages one and two are 25 laps each with stage three lasting 59 laps for a total of 109 laps around the 2.25 mile track.

Shane van Gisbergen brings the field down for the green flag start of the race with Tyler Reddick alongside.  Van Gisbergen gets out in front for the lead with Joey Logano taking second.  The drivers have gotten mostly single file as they approach lap two.

Lap two, Shane van Gisbergen has a half second lead on Joey Logano; Kyle Larson, AJ Allmendinger, and Tyler Reddick round out the top five.

Going into turn seven, Kyle Larson passes Joey Logano for second.  Logano drops three spots on the pass.

Lap three, Denny Hamlin has fallen six spots since the start of the race.

Lap four, Shane van Gisbergen continues to increase his lead and is now a near second and a half out in front of Kyle Larson; Tyler Reddick, AJ Allmendinger, and Joey Logano round out the top five.

Corey LaJoie is slowed on the track and works his way to pit road in a smoking car.

Lap six, Shane van Gisbergen holds a lead of over a second on Kyle Larson.

Lap eight, Shane van Gisbergen holds a one second lead on Kyle Larson; Tyler Reddick, AJ Allmendinger, and Joey Logano continue to round out the top five. 

Lap 10, Shane van Gisbergen has increased his lead on Kyle Larson to over a second and a half.

Lap eleven, Austin Cindric gets loose but saves the car as Chase Elliott is on his bumper and looking to pass in a battle for sixth.

Lap 12, Shane van Gisbergen has pulled out to a two second lead on Kyle Larson.  Chase Elliott finally gets around Austin Cindric for sixth.

Ryan Preece spins out in a single car event but gets the car moving again and the track stays green.

Bubba Wallace missed the front stretch chicane and will have to come to a complete stop before moving on or be assessed a penalty.  He lost four spots with the penalty.

Lap 13, Martin Truex Jr short cut the chicane on the back stretch and will have to serve a complete stop penalty.

Lap 16, Shane van Gisbergen continues to lead the race and has a lead of nearly two seconds on Kyle Larson; Tyler Reddick, AJ Allmendinger, and Joey Logano round out the top five.

Drivers are reporting that the new lower “turtles” are harder to see and it is why they are missing the chicane.

Lap 18, Shane van Gisbergen has increased his lead to over two seconds on Kyle Larson.

Corey LaJoie is out of the race.

William Byron reports that his power steering is getting stiff.  Byron has already secured a spot in the next round of the playoffs.

AJ Allmendinger short pits the end of stage one when he comes down pit road on lap 18.  More drivers follow Allmendinger down pit road.

Lap 20, more non-playoff drivers short pit the end of stage one.

Lap 22 Kyle Larson is the first playoff driver to come down pit roads.

Lap 23, leader Shane van Gisbergen makes his pit stop and gives the lead over to Tyler Reddick.

Taking only two tires, Tyler Reddick wins the race off of pit road but there were only a handful of drivers who needed to make a pit stop since most of the drivers short pitted the end of stage one.

Christopher Bell passes Brad Keselowski for fourth.

Tyler Reddick and Austin Dillon make contact.  Reddick keeps moving but it takes a bit for Dillon to get moving again.

While Tyler Reddick kept moving, he has some right side damage.  Before making contact with Austin Dillon, Reddick made contact with Denny Hamlin that had Reddick airborne.  Reddick reports that the car “doesn’t feel right” but will limp the car around until the end of the stage.

Lap 33, Kyle Larson has a near one second lead on Shane van Gisbergen; AJ Allmendinger, Christoppher Bell, and Brad Keselowski round out the top five.

The regular season champion, Tyler Reddick is now below the cut line and in danger of being eliminated from the playoffs.

The caution flag comes out on lap 35 when Chase Briscoe has a flat tire.  Briscoe is the second playoff driver to have issues.  Denny Hamlin may also have damage to his car after the contact with Tyler Reddick.

Kyle Larson leads the field down for the green flag restart on lap 39 with Shane van Gisbergen alongside.  Lardon edges out in front with van Gisbergen and Christopher Bell in a battle for second.

Brad Keselowski gets turned around and causes a bit of a traffic jam but the drivers get sorted out and the track stays green.

Austin Dillon and Chase Briscoe make contact causing Dillon to miss the chicane.  Dillon has to make a complete stop before moving on.

Lap 40, Kyle Larson has a near half second lead on Christopher Bell; Shane van Gisbergen, William Byron, and Alex Bowman round out the top five.

Chase Briscoe is on pit road for repairs.

Drivers are making contact all over the track.

Tyler Reddick is back on the track and remains on the lead lap but he is three seconds behind the field.

Chase Briscoe takes his car to the garage and is out of the race.  He is the first driver to be eliminated from the playoffs.

A wheel rolling down the grass brings out the caution flag.  Austin Dillon had just come off of pit road but the crew did not get the lug nut secured.  Dillon will have to serve a tow lap penalty.

Tyler Reddick makes contact with Daniel Hemric and Hemric spins out.  Making contact with Hemric saved Reddick from spinning out.

Tyler Reddick passes Ricky Stenhouse Jr for one more spot; he is now just four points below the cut line with Joey Logano four points above.

With 15 laps to go, Kyle Larson has a lead of over two seconds on Christopher Bell; William Byron, Austin Cindric, and Chase Elliott round out the top five.

On fresher tires, AJ Allmendinger has moved through the field and is on Joey Logano’s bumper.

Just 12 laps remain in the race, Kyle Larson has a near two second lead on Christopher Bell; third place driver William Byron is over seven seconds back.

AJ Allmendinger passes Joey Logano for sixth.  Tyler Reddick is in 14th.  At the moment the drivers are even but Joey Logano holds the tie breaker and would be the driver moving on in the playoffs.

Ten to go!  Kyle Larson leads the race by over two seconds with the battle to be a part of the eight drivers in the playoffs continuing on the track.  Tyler Reddick has passed boss Denny Hamlin for 12th to put himself two points above the cut line.  The other boss man – Michael Jordan – is sitting on the pit box.

Three to go, Kyle Larson has already secured a spot in the playoffs, but is two and a half seconds out in front of the field.

Kyle Larson passes Daniel Suarez to put Suarez a lap down.  Suarez is 51 points below the cut line.

Kyle Larson wins the race for his sixth race win of the season.  Son Owen was with Larson for his last win at Bristol, this time it’s daughter Audrey who gets to celebrate with Dad and get a ride in the car.
