Who are your favorite artists?

I don’t really have a single favourite music artist. My tastes are varied; and of course, I support my musical friends.

I grew up in a home with a Classically trained Dad who did not approve of all that “noise”, so we weren’t allowed to listen to all that stuff. I had no idea of how deprived I was. 🙂 The only exception was “The Ed Sullivan Show” where we heard stuff but had no idea what it really was. I remember getting angry because all those girls in the audience were screaming at The Beatles and I couldn’t hear the music.

The year I turned 13, we all got our own clock radios as gifts. The hint was, you are old enough to get yourself up and ready for school. The best part was we could finally listen to whatever we wanted on the radio in our own rooms.

A whole new world opened up. Growing up listening to Classical music, I continued to listen to it…and still do; but now I could add to my musical education. I leaned more toward the softer rock.

A visit to the Grandparents meant seeing the cousins. My cousin was also into music and he had recorded a bunch of music on a cassette recorder (long before streaming and mobile phones) and played a song for me I fell in love with – “Mandy” by Barry Manilow. But at the time I wasn’t aware of who had done the song. Neil Sedaka released “Laughter in the Rain” and I remember getting the two names mixed up. But a “Midnight Special” performance changed all that and I was hooked!

Fifty years later, I still love Barry’s music. I have become a fan of Pink Floyed; along with a number of seventies artists including The Doobie Brothers, Chicago, and Disco!

I am attracted by the music itself, not a genre or a specific artist. My music playlist might shock some people who think my musical tastes are limited.

I am also a big fan of The Rippingtons, Acoustic Alchemy, Pat Metheny, Sting, George Michael, Stevie Wonder (especially the early stuff), Ricky Martin, The Allman Brothers (LOVE Jessica), Atlanta Rhythm Section, Il Divo, Barbra Streisand, Brian Setzer and the Stray Cats, Duran Duran, Hiroshima, Shadlowfax, Jean Michel Jarre, John Tesh, Jim Brickman, Jim Byrnes, plus a whole bunch more.

And of coure there are my friends from Kilbrannan, Enter the Haggis, Do Driver, More than Me, Thunderhand Joe and the Medicine Show, House of Hamil, Sultans of String, That 80’s Hair Band, and the Wild Geese.

As you can see the list of musicians I like is a very long one. I don’t thing that I could nail down just one person or group.

While there are some genres I don’t care for (hate is too harsh a word), I am a fan of MUSIC!
