It was a big weekend for racing last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway when all three of the series ran a race in which one group lost four of its playoff drivers and another set the field for the playoffs; while the third was in the middle of its first playoff round.

For the Cup Series it was the final race in round one of the playoffs.  By the end of the race a speeding penalty crushed Martin Truex Jr’s playoff future; Ty Gibbs, Harrison Burton, and Brad Keselowski were also eliminated from the playoffs.

The points have been reset to 3,000 points plus any stage and bonus points earned as the top 12 prepare for the beginning of round two at Kansas Speedway this weekend.

After his dominating win where he led all but 36 laps, Kyle Larson has retaken the lead in the point and playoff standings.

In the Xfinity Series it was the final night in the regular season.  Justin Allgaier went into the race with a 43 point lead over Cole Custer; but due to some bad luck,  Allgaier not only lost those 43 points, he also lost the regular season championship to Cole Custer.

With the points reset and the 12 driver playoff field set, Justin Allgaier leads by six points over Cole Custer.

For the Xfinity Series the playoffs begin this weekend at Kansas Speedway.

Among the 38 driver field at Bristol was Dale Earnhardt Jr for his lone Xfinity Series start of the race.  He noted that Hellman’s has not asked him to run a race next year and this may…or may not…be his final Xfinity Series race.  Earnhardt is now 49; the same age as his father Dale Sr when he died.
