What is a word you feel that too many people use?
There are days that it seems everywhere I turn, people cannot utter a single sentence without including at least one profane word. And sometimes it’s as if every other word is a cuss word.
Many years ago I read somewhere that people who have a tendency to use a lot of profanity do so because they do not have a good command of the English language. This is course was directed toward native speakers of English and its various dialects including those spoken in America.
One of my favourite authors is Alistair MacLean who is a master at description and keeping the reader guessing. but, I also like how he chooses to treat characters who use profanity…he either writes “he carried on a dialogue that was unprintable” or “he cussed for five minutes and never said the said word twice”. Now, this isn’t saying an occasional nasty word isn’t used, MacLean is judicious in his use of profanity.
When I see a book that interests me I will go to the one star reviews because that is where you learn how gruesome, explicit, and profane the book is and if the reviews note a great deal of profanity, I pass it over. Now, that is not to say that I refuse to read a book if it has such words. I just prefer not to read something where it seems the nasty words equal the not nasty ones.
When I was a kid, saying cuss words was a big no-no, one that would result in punishment (washing the mouth out with soap). My brothers have since made up for the lost time. But I choose not to do so…and I know words in more than one language. 😊 That isn’t to say that if I get VERY angry a word or two might not come out.
I just think society today relies far too much on the use of profanity and should find better ways to express themselves.
