The time has come for NASCAR to return to Chicago and the only street course race on the circuit. 

On an early Saturday morning, the Xfinity Series takes to the streets for The Loop 110.

Parker Kligerman’s crew got some grim news when the entered the garage before practice when they discovered an issue with the engine.  The crew is going to try to make it through qualifying before making an engine change.  He will have to start the race from the back of the field but it will improve his chances of getting a better pit stall spot for next week.

John Hunter Nemechek’s crew also had to deal with an engine issue and changed the engine before Nemechek got on the track.  He will have to start the race from the back of the field.

Kenko Mura was the first driver to get loose on the track. 

Brad Perez is stopped on the track with a possible fuel pump issues.

A full field of drivers has come to Chicago with 43 drivers for 38 starting spots including Daniel Suarez, John Hunter Nemechek, Ty Gibbs, Kyle Larson, and Joey Logano.

With a 2.2 mile street course, the drivers will be using two and three spotters to help them get through the course.

Justin Allgaier gets into the tire wall on turn four with the drivers side against the tires.  Alon Day comes around the corner and hits Allgaier.  The driver’s side of his car is torn up and the right rear of Allgaier’s car.  Day reported that he did not get the message that there was a yellow on the course.  There is a great deal of debris spread across the course that will need to be cleaned up before the cars can get moving again.

Kenko Mura gets into the tire wall on turn two for his second incident.

Out of the infield care center, Justin Allgaier said that he will have to move Kenko Mura spins out for a third time but this time the track stays green.

Sheldon Creed gets in to the wall in turns four and five.  Brennan Poole also has some contact with the wall but the track stays green.

Sage Karam gets in the wall and tire barrier with a hard hit.  There is enough damage that he will have to move to a backup car.

Daniel Suarez spins out and makes some contact with the wall.

After the 50 minutes practice session, New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen and Sam Mayer top the leaderboard in practice; swapping it back and forth.

At the end of practice, Sheldon Creed had an engine issue.

A street course, the drivers have been divided into two groups for 15 minute group qualifying sessions.  The top five drivers from each session will move on to a second round of qualifying for the pole.

The drivers are running speeds of around 100 miles per hour faster than the posted speed limits of the streets.

Ty Dillon’s car is smoking and leaking fluid.

Kyle Larson, Parker Kligerman, Chandler Smith, Conner Mosack, and Jesse Love are the top five drivers from Group A that will move on to round two of qualifying.

Thomas Annunziata gets into a tire barrier and off the course during his qualifying run.

From Group B Shane van Gisbergen, Sam Mayer, Ty Gibbs, John Hunter Nemechek, and Cole Custer will move on to round two of qualifying.

The top 10 drivers have 10 minutes of group qualifying to determine who will sit on the pole.

With a time of 89.448 seconds, Shane van Gisbergen will sit on the pole with Kyle Larson starting alongside on the front row.

Kenko Mura, Ty Dillon, Alon Day, Thomas Annunziata, and Brad Perez failed to qualify for the race.

Sheldon Creed, Parker Kligerman, John Hunter Nemechek, Ryan Sieg, Kyle Weatherman, Kyle Sieg, Daniel Suarez,  and Justin Allgaier will have to start the race from the back of the field after incidents during practice and qualifying.

Stages one and two are just 15 laps each with stage three lasting 20 laps for a total of 50 laps around the 2.2 mile course.  The drivers can run 28 to 30 laps on a single load of fuel.

Shane van Gisbergen brings the field down for the green flag start of the race with Kyle Larson alongside.  Van Gisbergen gets out in front for the lead on the start with Kyle Larson in second.

Kyle Larson battles with Shane van Gisbergen for the lead and takes the lead in turn four.

But Shane van Gisbergen retakes the lead in turn six.  Kyle Larson battles with Ty Gibbs for second.

Lap two, Shane van Gisbergen has a lead of over half a second on Kyle Larson; Ty Gibbs, Connor Mosack, and Jesse Love round out the top five.

After starting from the back of the field, Parker Kligerman has moved up to 25th; Justin Allgaier is in 31st.

Lap three, Kyle Larson comes up to battle with Shane van Gisbergen for the lead with Ty Gibbs right behind them.

Lap three, Kyle Larson takes the lead in turn four.

Blaine Perkins is the first driver to go one lap down.

Lap four, Kyle Larson holds on to the lead over Shane van Gisbergen; Ty Gibbs, Connor Mosack, and Jesse Love round out the top five.

Lap six, Shane van Gisbergen passes Kyle Larson to retake the lead.

Chandler Smith reports that the engine is blowing up; adding that the oil temps were over 300 degrees.

The first caution comes out on lap seven when Matt DiBenedetto spins out leaving debris on the course.

Lap 13 Justin Allgaier comes down pit road after spinning out in 24th.

Riley Herbst spins out but avoids the tire barrier after contact with Sheldon Creed but the track stays green.

Lap 14 Shane van Gisbergen is on Kyl Larson’s bumper looking to take the lead.  The two have pulled away from the rest of the field.

Lap 15, Kyle Larson leads the race with Shane van Gisbergen in second.  Van Gisbergen comes up to battle for the lead with van Gisbergen getting the lead in turn seven.

Some of the drivers come down pit road but the leaders stay out.  Cole Custer was charged with passing on pit road.  Riley Herbst, Preston Pardus, and Sage Karam were also penalized.

Lap 20, Kyle Larson leads the race with Shane van Gisbergen in second; AJ Allmendinger, Connor Mosack, and Sammy Smith round out the top five.

Lap 21, Kyle Larson and Shane van Gisbergen again battle for the lead.

Lap 22, the top five drivers have yet to make a pit stop.

The caution flag comes out on lap 23 when AJ Allmendinger spins out and has damage to the right side of his car.

Drivers come down pit road for service.  Cole Custer takes fuel only.

Lap 26, Sammy Smith brings the field down for the green flag restart with Austin Hill alongside.  Kyle Larson restarts the race in 17th and Shane van Gisbergen restarts the race in 20th.

Austin Hill is reporting some radio issues.  He cannot hear everyone.

Austin Hill takes the lead; Sammy Smith, Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier, and Sam Mayer round out the top five.

Lap 27, Kyle Larson and Joey Logano are part of a three wide battle.

Austin Hill has a near one second lead on Sammy Smith; Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier, and Sam Mayer round out the top five.

Jeremy Clements and Chandler Smith are out of the race.

Lap 28, Kyle Larson has entered the top 10 with Shane van Gisbergen in eleventh.

Lap 29, Shane van Gisbergen passes Kyle Larson for tenth place.

With a lead of over a second, Austin Hill wins stage two.

Cole Custer reports that he might have a power steering issue.

Lap 35, Austin Hill brings the field down for the green flag start of stage three with Jesse Love alongside.  Jesse Love gets past Austin Hill to take the lead.  Ty Gibbs and Austin Hill battle for second.

Lap 36, the top five are Jesse Love, ty Gibbs, Austin Hill, Sheldon Creed, and Sam Mayer.  Shane van Gisbergen is just outside the top five in sixth.  Kyle Larson is in ninth.

Josh Bilicki spins out after contact from Sage Karam to bring out the caution flag; Parker Retzlaff, Andre Castro, and Kyle Sieg also sustained damage when the drivers got stacked up.

Jesse Love brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 40 with Ty Gibbs alongside.  Jesse Love takes the lead; Austin Hill and Ty Gibbs battle for second.  AJ Allmendinger and Leland Honeyman make contact and spin out Brandon Jones but the track stays green.

The caution flag comes out on lap 41 when Preston Pardus is stopped on the track with no power.

Fans are stacked eight and 10 deep trying to get a look at the action on the race course.

Just seven laps to go, Jesse Love holds on to the lead; Shane van Gisbergen begins his battle with Ty Gibbs for second.

The caution flag comes out with laps to go for Leland Honeyman who is buried up to his windshield in the tire barrier.  He has a flat tire.

Jesse Love brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 48 with Ty Gibbs alongside.  Love gets out in front.  Sam Mayer spins out the but track stays green.  Shane van Gisbergen passes Ty Gibbs for second.

Shane van Gisbergen wins race number three this season…get ready to kick the rugby ball!  The rugby ball is a football.

Van Gisbergen said that it was a lot of fun racing with Kyle Larson; adding that they were waving to each other.
