Canales had a television show in Corpus Christi where he has been credited with helping to launch the career of singer Selena when she was just 13 years old.  Promoting Tejano and Norteña music, guests on his television show included La Sombra de Chicago, Selena, Nancy, La Mafia, Mazz, Intocable, Grupo Pegasso De Emilio Reyna, Fama, Jaime y Los Chamacos, Jennifer Peña, Los Tigres del Norte, and Los Relámpagos del Norte.

Before launching his television show in the 80’s, Canales toured with his own band.

Longtime friend and former band mate Art Galvan spoke on Canales saying, “he was a funny, funny guy…he was a good entertainer, he had the gift of gab.  He lived a long, good life.”

He was born Juan Jose Canales on August 19, 1947 in General Trevino, Mexico but his family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas when he was a small boy.
