On May 9 The Strong Museum National Museum of Play announced the 2024 class of the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The newest inductees were selected for their popularity over time, influence on the video game community, and their influence on popular culture and society.
The newest class of The World Video Game Hall of Fame were chosen from 12 finalists – “Asteroids”, “Myst”, ”Resident Evil”, “SimCity”, and “Ultima”. “Elite”, “Guitar Hero”, “Metroid”, “Neopets”, “Tokemeki Memorial”, “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater”, and “You Don’t Know Jack”.
The Hall of Fame is housed on the second floor of The Strong along with the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York.
Meet the 2024 World Video Hall of Fame inductees:
“Asteroids” is among the earliest of home video games industry as a part of the Atari lineup.
One of the early mysterious puzzle games, “Myst” was available for PC’s on CD-ROM. One of the top game sellers in the ‘90’s, the game sold over six million copies.
“Resident Evil” was among the first “survival horror” games, it went on to spawn a media franchise of over one billion dollars. “Resident Evil” catered to the older audiences.
Simulation games have been a part of the video age from the beginning, but “SimCity” launched the genre into a whole new popularity that catered to adults and children alike. It allowed gamers to create and built their own dynasties. Since the launch of the original “SimCity” the game has launched numerous sequels and spin-offs.
“Ultima: The First Age of Darkness” was a pioneer of the computer role playing games. Originally released in 1981, the game combined role playing, fantasy, and science fiction. It went on to spawn a number of franchises and inspired numerous future gamers.
