The very first Grammy Award was presented in 1959. Since that time, thousands of the miniature gramophone have been handed out to musicians in tribute to their musical prowess.
An industry award, the winners are chosen by the artists’ peers; which has made it a coveted award.
However, in recent years, the Recording Academy has faced some backlash from music fans over the choices of both the nominees and the winners. As a result, the format for selections has changed in an attempt to portray more transparency.
But other than the emotional high experienced by the winners and the possible boost to their careers and record sales…what is the golden gramophone really worth???
Due to the materials used in creating the trophies – a zinc alloy called “Grammium” – and coated with 24-karat gold – and labour to make them runs at nearly $800 each for the nine inch tall trophy.
With hundreds of Grammy Awards needed for each ceremony, – 600 to 800 – Grammy Awards are made throughout the year. Grammys are made in the USA in Colorado and takes 15 hours to create each one. Grammys are made for the Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards.
“The Grammy Effect” – the boost to an artist’s career after a win and even an appearance on the live television broadcast; especially for the New Artist of the Year winner – can make a musician’s career…or revive one.
Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell have not had a song or record on the music charts in years; but after their appearances on the 2024 Grammy Awards, both artists saw their songs in the top 10.
