For many years the Cup Series only ran two road course races each year – Sonoma and Watkins Glen – but in recent years NASCAR has added a number of road course races bringing the total to some half a dozen races.
Of the current Cup Series drivers only 16 of them have won a road course race – only seven of them have won more than one race. But one driver tops the list with a grand total of seven wins.
NASCAR drivers are used to making only left hand turns on oval tracks; but road course racing requires both right and left hand turns – something that can be very difficult for racers.
This weekend NASCAR travels to Circuit of the Americas for the first road course race of the year.
This weekend 39 Cup drivers will take to the 3.4 mile course at COTA. Of the 16 previous road course winners who will have the best chance of winning…or will a newcomer come to join the list???
Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez, Shane van Gisbergen, Michael McDowell, and William Byron have each won a single road course race.
Ross Chastain is a previous COTA winner.
Christopher Bell has two road course wins.
AJ Allmendinger and Tyler Reddick each have three road course wins. Reddick is the reigning COTA winner.
It’s the Kyle and Kyle show with Busch and Larson each winning four road course races.
Martin Truex Jr has five road course wins.
But second generation driver Chase Elliott tops the list with seven road course wins including one at COTA. Elliott missed COTA last year after breaking his leg in a snowboarding accident.
