It’s the biggest night in Hollywood with the annual Academy Awards presented by the Film Academy.  Commonly known as The Oscars, this year the Academy Awards is celebrating 96 years of film.  A celebration that was nearly in jeopardy when both the actors and writers went on strike last summer – a strike that lasted over four months.

Late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel returns to host the gala event.

The thank you’s began by thanking all the “behind the scenes people”.

The first award of the night was for Best Supporting Actress in a Film and went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for her role in “The Holdovers”.  This was her first Oscar nomination and win. 

The award for Best Animated Short Film went to “War is Over” – a film inspired by the music of John and Yoko Ono Lennon. 

The award for Best Animated Feature Film went to “The Boy and the Heron”.

The award for Best Original Screenplay went to “Anatomy of a Fall”. This is their first Academy Award win.

The award for Best Adapted Screenplay went to “American Fiction”. 

The award for Best in Makeup and Hairstyling went to Josh Weston, Nadia Stacey, and Mark Collier for “Poor Things”.

The award for Best in Production and Set Design went to James Price, Shona Heath, and Zsuzsa Mihalek.

The award for Best in Costume Design went to Holly Waddington for “Poor Things”.  This is her first nomination and win. 

The award for Best International Feature Film went to the British Film “The Zone of Interest”.

While the Academy Awards have no award honouring the stunt crews, they did pay homage to them with a film clip.

The award for Best Supporting Actor went to Robert Downey Jr for his role in “Oppenheimer”.  This is his first Academy Award win.

The award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects went to “Godzilla Minus One”.  This is their first Academy Award win

The award for Best Achievement in Film Editing went to Jennifer Lame for “Oppenheimer”.  This is her first Academy Award win.

The award for Best Documentary Short Film went to “The Last Repair Shop”. 

The award for Best Documentary Feature Film went to the film about the early days of the war between the Ukraine and Russia “20 Days from Mariupol”.  It is the first Academy Award ever in the Ukraine.  Creators said that they would give it back for it never to have happened.  But he can’t change history; so will make sure it is never forgotten.

The award for Best Achievement in Cinematography went to Hoyte van Hoytema for “Oppenheimer”.

The award for Best Live Action Short Film went to “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”.

The award for Best Achievement in Sound went to Johnnie Burn and Tarn Willers for “The Zone of Interest”.

The award for Best Original Score went to Ludwig Goransson for “Oppenheimer”.

The award for Best Original Song went to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for “What Was I Made For” from “Barbie”.

A string quartet performed “Time to Say Goodbye” that morphed into a live performance by Andrea and Matteo Bocelli as the In Memoriam segment aired a video of those who were lost over the past year.

The award for Best Leading Actor in a Film went to Cillian Murphy for his role as Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer”.  This is Murphy’s first Academy Award win.  Murphy noted that he was a bit overwhelmed.  He dedicated the win to the peacemakers everywhere.

Steven Spielberg presented the award for Best Direction in a Film to Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer”.  This is Nolan’s first Academy Award win.

The award for Best Leading Actress in a Film went to Emma Stone for her role as Bella in “Poor Things”.

Al Pacino presented the final award of the night for Best Picture and it went to “Oppenheimer”.  This is the seventh award of the night for the film which has won numerous awards during this award season.
