It will probably be changed 100 times before it went to print, but at the moment my first line would be…
Through it all there was always the music…
There were two sounds that were most prominent in my life when I was very small – the sound of my Dad’s piano and the crashing of the waves from the Atlantic Ocean.
While Alzheimer’s has ravaged my Dad’s brain and he no longer plays, my Dad is a classically trained pianist who has been playing since he was a child. My childhood and teen years were filled with the sounds of my Dad playing his piano.
When I was born, we lived on the beach…literally…out the back door and there we were. Needless to say, we spent a great deal of time on that beach with the sound of surf. To me, those recordings of an ocean just do not compare to the real thing!
I will not say that I have been through a lot in my life; but there has been some stuff…stuff that would not be revealed in any biography…auto or otherwise. But as the opening line says, “through it all there was always the music…my Dad’s playing, the radio, tinkering on my live performances.
There is a saying…those who can’t do, teach; well…those who can’t play, write. I have never been good enough…or even confident enough…to perform live on stage. Instead, I write about music and musicians.
So, through it all, there was always the music!
