Write about your first computer.
When I moved from Jr college to college, computers were just beginning to be a “thing”. Windows did not yet exist and DOS was akin to pulling out the panel and wiring it yourself.
But there was this new company called Apple who touted “people friendly” computers that all you needed to do was plug it in and go.
Somehow, I got a grant to buy myself a computer for school. So, down to the campus computer store I went and came out with this “box” with a screen on it. It only had one meg of memory…and we thought that was really something.
There were no SD cards or flash drives; not even a little hard plastic three inch disc; you stored your data on a big five inch floppy disc!
Boy, times really have changed…no wi-fi, no take it with you battery; just hard wired dial up internet cables – internet was the gee wiz gadget of the year – and the “pluggy-inny-thingy” to make it work.
Those were also the days of AOL and free sign up discs were EVERYWHERE! You PAID for each email you sent. But boy, what a time saver when it came to research!
And the other BIG toy was the cut and paste feature in the word processor! Sure came in handy for those research papers and beat the daylights out of the file cards!
Compared to the computers and laptops of today, those early models were like party lines on the dial up phones and taking a bath in a washtub in the kitchen.
Back then my little Apple was a big deal…these days I can’t make it through the day without one of my wi-fi devices to create, write, and post my work.
