Name an attraction or town close to home that you still haven’t got around to visiting.

As many of you know by now, I have a thing for the water…and boats.

Once, many years ago I took a multi-hour cruise through the Bayou in New Orleans. The trip included going through a couple of locks. It was terrifying, exhilarating, and awestruck all at the same time to see the wall of water ahead a the boat rose.

Just north of my Niagara Falls home is Lockport – named for its locks along the Erie Canal. Lockport feature two boat attractions…neither of which I have managed to visit. Before Covid there was no public form of transportation to get to these attractions.

In the past couple of years the summer tourist shuttle service – the Discover Niagara Shuttle – has added a second shuttle that travels to Lockport, but there always seemed to be something that kept me from going…often the weather. It seems that the past few summers have been very rainy or very hot.

Last summer tragedy struck at one of the Lockport attractions – an underground boat ride that went through some caves. Somehow – I’m not sure they even know yet – the boat capsized and someone died. The attraction was completely closed for a while but has since reopened but only for pedestrian traffic. There is no word as to whether the boat ride will open again…if ever.

The other boat attraction is a ride through some of the locks. I must try to get up there – armed with the camera bag of course – and take a ride on that boat. The ride in New Orleans was a paddlewheel boat. I wonder what kind of boat this ride will be?

A few years ago, thanks to the Discover Shuttle,I finally made i to Old Fort Niagara to see the re-enactments; now I need to take advantage of the shuttle and get to Lockport and a ride through the locks!
