It was big week for the productions running on Broadway last week. Many of the shows gave nine performances instead of the normal eight and raked in enough at the box office to set some new records to close out 2023.
Always a big box office draw that routinely breaks the $2 million mark, “The Lion King” doubled it’s box office take last week and topped $4 million…and that was without a 100 percent capacity crowd. The $4,316,629 box office receipts set a new Broadway record for the largest box office take in a single week…topping its own record. “Wicked” also topped $4 million with “Aladdin” setting a new box office record at the New Amsterdam Theatre with $2,979,728 in ticket sales. The Tony Award winning play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”, “MJ The Musical”, “Hamilton”, “Sweeney Todd”, and “Back to the Future” all topped the $2 million mark in the last week of 2023.
“& Juliet”, “SIX: The Musical”, ”Chicago”, and “Gutenberg! The Musical” also broke records last week.
“Some Like it Hot” and “I Need That” closed on December 30 with both productions seeing their best box office draws of the run. “Some Like it Hot” earned $1.398,818; while “I Need That” came in just under the $1 million mark with $905,467 at the box office.
Of the 27 productions currently running on Broadway, 20 of them were members of the $1 million club with 22 of the 27 topping the 90 percent attendance mark.
Broadway closed out 2023 in a big way with box office figures topping $45 million and over 250,000 people seeing at least one of its productions.
