You have three magic genie wishes, what are you asking for?
“All I ask is a tall ship and a star to sail her by.“
While my wish is not quite so quaint, the saying is apropos . If I could wish for anything in this world, it would indeed be a boat…one big enough for me to live on and feel the seas rolling under me.
I was an adult when I learned of my Nordic roots but have always loved being by the water. I had long thought that my love of the sea was because I was born under the water sign, but have since learned of my ancestry – a long line of seafaring Norsemen.
I have often thought that it might be cool to take an old Paddlewheel boat or similar type ship and convert it to a floating home. A dream house!

Getting the boat itself could be seen as a single wish, but if I were to truly make it a dream home, it would take more than one wish to bring it to life.
But what of the other wishes???
After the tragedy of September 11, 2001 the George Eastman House asked people to make contributions for a new exhibit – What Matters to You. Nearly all of the photos contributed were of friends, family, and pets. I entered a photo I had taken earlier in the year sitting on the pier one evening for the Summer Solstice. I sat on the pier for over 30 minutes waiting for that perfect shot. The sun was reflecting on the water and a boater came by stopping in the middle of the reflection. I had my shot! And that was the photo I entered with the caption that the peace and tranquility of the water was something very important to me.
Given current events in the world today, peach and tranquility seems like a wish that is nearly impossible to achieve.
And well for a really “out there” wish…to have my Dad back before the Alzheimer’s disease has ravaged his brain. I grew up listening to him play the piano and would love to hear him play once again.
We all know that the “magic lantern” and a genie that grants wishes can only be found in the pages of fairy tales, but it is always nice to dream of things that could be. Things found only in books of fiction and on the film screen.
