On August 10 Richard Marx brought his 80’s rock music to Artpark in Lewiston, New York; but before Marx performed, the Yacht Rock Revue took the stage at the outdoor venue for their debut performance in western New York.

From the very first song, Marx had the crowd dancing, singing, and clapping along.
After opening the show with “Endless Summer Nights”, Marx had a little fun extoling his prowess with “imitations” of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins.
After singing what he called one of the favourites of the songs he has written – “Angelia” – Marx performed a new song – a song he wrote with his son Lucas – “Same Heartbreak Different Day”.
Marx noted that the current tour was about his hits, he did want to throw in a couple of new tunes. He also performed “Shame on You” – a song that had Taylor Hawkins playing the drums.
Those hits included “Hold on to the Night”, “I Will Be Your Man”, “Hazzard”, and “Don’t Mean Nothin’”.
Noting that his journey into the world of music began as a backup singer for Lionel Richie, Marx performed two hit songs that he wrote for other artists – “This I Promise You” by N’Sync and “Long Hot Summer” with Keith Urban.
Marx performed a three song encore of “Satisfied, “Should’ve Known Better”, and his big hit song “Right Here Waiting”.
The Grammy Award winning multi-platinum selling artist turns 60 next month but shows no signs of his age in looks or sound. Marx’ voice was the same as when he first released his debut album including holding notes for extended times with no effort.
Specializing in the music of the 80’s and 90’s, the rockers performed music by the Doobie Brothers, Gerry Raferty, Sade, Rupert Holmes – remember the “Pina Colada Song”? – , Tears for Fears, the Pointer Sisters, Toto, ABBA, and Hall & Oates. They also performed a very interesting mashup of George Benson’s “Breezin’” with the Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb hit “Guilty”.
The band called their shows a get together to have fun and sing songs. And like any good band, the Yacht Rock Revue left the crowd of captain’s hat wearing fans cheering for more.
If the Yacht Rock Revue was a get together, Richard Marx had a party. Looking as if he has never aged, Marx ran on to the stage wearing a bright yellow jacket, blue shirt, and white pants.
