Before a play or musical on Broadway has an official opening date, the run a series of previews. Last week the musical “Back to the Future” opened and after only four preview performances, it has joined the million dollar club.
In the film production of “Back to the Future”, Doc Brown tells Marty that the DeLorean must run at at least 88 mph in order to travel through time; it appears that the stage production of the film has also reached the magic speed. Not only has the musical joined the million dollar club, it is one of only three productions over the past week, who had 100 percent capacity attendance.
The “Back to the Future” musical previously ran on London’s West End where it earned an Olivier Award (Britain’s equivalent of a Tony Award).
The plays “Leopoldstadt” and “Prima Facie”. Also joined the million dollar club in their final week before closing. “Fat Ham” and “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” also closed at the end of the week.
“The Lion King” continues to top the list in ticket sales, reaching nearly two and a half million at the box office.
According to records a total 272,767 people attended a Broadway production last week.

Attendance continues to be brisk with 20 of the 33 shows running reaching at least 90 percent capacity.
