The presentation of the annual Tony Awards marks the official end of the Broadway season. But the shows continue to run as casts and crews prepare for the new season set to begin in September.
See what’s on the horizon for the new Broadway season…
While technically opening before the beginning of the new season “Grey House” is the first production of the 2023-24 season. The Levi Holloway production is playing at the Lyceum Theatre. Tatiana Maslany and Paul Sparks star as the married couple who becomes stranded and encounter a peculiar family in the woods.
Currently in previews, “Once Upon a One More Time” is the latest edition of the popular jukebox musicals. A fairy godmother presents copies of “The Feminine Mystique” to classic fairytale heroines who then try to change their stories to the music of Brittney Spears.
Following a run on Off-Broadway, “Here Lies Love” returns this time to Broadway with an all Filipino cast with music by award winning artists David Byrne and Fatboy Slim. The musical tells the story of Imelda Marcos. Byrne previously announced that the disco-pop production would use “canned” music but when the music opens on June 17 for previews, it will include live pit musicians.
Alex Edelman’s one man comedy show “Just For Us” comes to Broadway after an extended Off-Broadway run. Previews open June 22 with the show running June 26 to August 19.
After three successful films, Marty McFly goes from the silver screen to the Broadway stage with “Back to the Future: The Musical”. After making its world debut on the West End in London, “Back to the Future: The Musical” crosses the pond with Roger Bart and Hugh Coles coming along as Doc Brown and Doc Brown. Previews begin June 30 at the Winter Garden Theatre with the official opening August 3.
“The Cottage” stars Jason Alexander and tells the story of a woman who decides that it is time to “come clean” abut her affair…to her husband and her lover’s wife. “The Cottage” begins previews July 7 with the official opening July 24 at the Hayes Theater.
“The Shark is Broken” originally debuted at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and on the West End. The play give the audience a peek at what sometimes goes on behind the scenes; this time it’s the set of “Jaws” with Robert Shaw as one of its stars. Previews begin July 25 at the Golden Theatre with the official opening set for August 10.
Making his Broadway debut illusionist Antonio Diaz starts in “El Mago Pop” – a show of magic and illusions that was inspired by “the idea of challenging the limits of the impossible”. “El Mago Pop” will for only 10 days from August 17 to 27 at the Barrymore Theatre.
Award winning musician Melissa Etheridge brings her one woman show “My Window” – the story of her life. The show previously ran on Off-Broadway last year. “My Window” begins September 14 with the official opening on September 28 at the Circle in the Square.
Stephen Sondheim may no longer be with us, but his productions will live on…”Merrily We Roll Along” returns to Broadway this fall with a limited run at the Hudson Theatre September 19. “Merrily We Roll Along” will run for just 18 weeks.
Many years in the planning, “Harmony” will finally see its Broadway debut in October. Based on the true story of the Comedian Harmonists in 1920’s Germany, “Harmony” was written by Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman “Harmony” opens with previews on October 18 and the official opening on November 13 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
“Prayer for the French Republic” makes the transition from Off-Broadway to Broadway in December. “Playing for the French Republic” tells the story of five generations of a French Jewish family and is set to open for previews on December 19 at the Friedman Theatre with the official opening on January 9.
“Pure Victorious”, “I Need That”, “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”, “Doubt”, “Home”, “An Enemy of the People”, and “The Wiz” have all announced intentions of putting on productions in the new season; but have yet to set any official opening dates or theatres.
