After the race at Phoenix Raceway, NASCAR issued the biggest penalty in the sport’s history when all four of the Hendrick Motorsports cars were charged with modifying parts. The number five, nine, 24, and 48 cars were all docked 100 car owner points, given a $100,000 fine, and had their crew chief suspended for four races. With Chase Elliott out of the car with a broken leg, substitute driver Josh Berry was not docked any points since he does not earn Cup Series point; but Kyle Larson, William Byron, and Alex Bowman were all docked 100 driver points and docked 10 playoff points.
On March 28, the National Motorsports Appeal Panel amended the penalty and has restored all of the driver, owner, and playoff points to the teams.
Kaulig Racing was also issued the same penalties as HMS but has a separate appeal hearing next week. Currently Justin Haley is a negative seven points and last in the point standings due to his 100 penalty.
The restoration of points has caused a major shake up in the points standings.
