The 65th annual Grammy Award ceremonies on February 5, 2023 featured a number of historic events Beyonce was only the beginning when she became the winningest artist in Grammy history with 32. She broke the record with the win of Best Dance or Electronic Music Album for her album “Renaissance”.

Along with a number of new categories created this year, Kim Petras became the first transgender female to win a Grammy Award when she and Sam Smith won for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance.

Dr. Dre earned the first Global Impact Award that now bear his name.

The animated film “Encanto” won for all three of the awards that it was nominated for; including Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media to Germaine Franco – the first woman of colour to win the award.

While there have been all male or mixed male and female winners in the Best Country Duo or Group Performance category; Carly Pearce and Ashley McBryde became the first female duo to win the award.

Tobias Jesso Jr won the first ever Non-Classical Songwriter of the Year Award.

No one in the theater was more surprised than Bonnie Raitt herself when she was announced the winner of the Song of the Year award for “Made Up Mind”; but it was not her first win of the night; she also took home the Best Americana Performance award.

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden presented the inaugural Special Merit Award for Best Song for Social Change to Iranian artist Shervin Hajipour for “araye” – a song he was arrested for creating.

Over the years Taylor Swift has won numerous awards in fan voted ceremonies; but her win of Shor Form Music Video for “All Too Well: The Short Film” was the first time she has won such an award as the artist and director.

Robert Glasper made a little history when he won the Best R&B Album award for both his “Black Radio” and “Black Radio III” albums.  It was the first time that an artist won the same award for the original album and a sequel.

The HBCU – Historically Black College or University – Tennessee State University Marching Band became the first HBCU and the first Marching band to win a Grammy when they took home the award for Best Roots Gospel Album.

Viola Davis joined Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Hudson as an EGOT winner with her Grammy for Best Audio Book Naration and Storytelling Recording.  EGOT stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards.  There has been only a handful of entertainers to achieve EGOT status.
