After a two year hiatus, the Daytime Emmy Awards returns to a live audience event with the 49th annual ceremony with Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner serving as hosts for the gala event.
There was a time when the daytime drama ruled the airwaves; today only a few remain and “General Hospital” was the big winner of the night taking home a total of five Emmys.
Counting the previous weekend’s creative arts awards event, singer, coach, and talk show host Kelly Clarkson took home the most awards overall with seven.
But perhaps the biggest event of the night was when Mishael Morgan from “Young and the Restless” became the first female actor of colour to take home the award for lead actress. In her acceptance speech the Trinidad and Tobago native said, “we are breaking glass ceilings left, right and center. We can and we will do this thing called equality and unity together. I am being honored regardless of the color of my skin, regardless of my passport, for being the best at what I do. Now there are little girls all around the world and they’re seeing another step forward and they know that no matter their industry, no matter their vocation, no matter what, they can strive to be the best at what they do. Not only can they achieve it, but they will be celebrated.”
Michael Bolton sang “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” as the In Memoriam segment aired which was introduced by Susan Lucci.
Jennifr Aniston presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to her Dad John Aniston for his 37 year role a Victor Kiriakis on “Days of Our Lives”. The 88 year old actor was not present for the presentation.
