IT’s All-Star weekend for the NASCAR Cup Series, but before the drivers can take to the track for the race, they must first qualify and set the field…most of it.
Larry McReynolds joins Mike Joy and Clint Bowyer in the Texas Motor Speedway broadcast booth for All Star Open and All Star Race qualifying that includes a final round bracket qualifying with a pit stop and a bit of drag racing to set the pole.
First up is a 15 minute practice of the 16 drivers competing in the All Star Open race. Then there will be a 20 minute practice session for the drivers who have already qualified for the All Star race.
Finally it is time for the qualifying to begin…

have all qualified for the 2022 All Star race after winning a race in 2021 or 2022.
The 16 drivers who qualified for the All Star Open will make a single car one lap to qualify for the race with the fastest lap taking the pole.
BJ McLeod is the first driver on the track ad posts a time of 29.927 seconds. The drivers make their qualifying in reverse order of their point standings.
Tyler Reddick will sit on the pole for the Open race after a qualifying time of 28,88 seconds.

After qualifying on the pole, Tyler Reddick announced that the crew had to make some adjustments to the car and he will have to start the race from the back of the field.
For the drivers who have already qualified for the All Star Race, there will be two rounds of qualifying; a single car one lap run with the top eight battling it out for the pole in a unique format.
AJ Allmendinger is the first driver on the track and clocks a time of 28,807 seconds.
Kurt Busch is making his 21st consecutive All Star Race appearance. He posts a time of 28.62 seconds around the track.
With a time of 28,52, William Byron tops the list of qualifying in round one.
The eight drivers that will compete for the pole in round two are:

In round two the drivers will pair up and will have to make a four tire pit stop and then a drag race run – with no speed limit – down pit road and around the track to the start/finish line.
Up first is number one seed William Byron and number eight seed Aric Almirola. On the inside lane, William Byron gets a jump on Aric Almirola to win the duel.
The next pairing is number three seed Ryan Blaney and number six seed Ross Chastain. From the outside lane Ryan Blaney gets out first but Ross Chastain is right on his bumper. Ryan Blaney wins the battle.
Next up are number four seed Kurt Busch and number five seed Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson gets off of pit road first and wins the battle.
The final battle is number two seed Kyle Busch and number seven seed Martin Truex Jr. Kyle Busch gets out on to the track first to win the battle. The jackman on Martin Truex’s team had trouble getting the jack under the car.
The next round will have William Byron, Kyle Busch, Ryan Blaney, and Kyle Larson.
The tire being used for the pit stop are the ones that were used in practice and qualifying.
First up is William Byron and Ryan Blaney with Blaney winning the battle and earning a starting spot on the front row.
Next it’s a battle of the Kyles with Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson. Kyle Larson had a slow start to the pit box; Kyle Busch jumps out in front to win the battle and a spot on the front row.
The final battle is between Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch to determine who will sit on the pole. Kyle Busch has chosen the inside lane for all three of his pit stops. Kyle Busch edges out Ryan Blaney getting out on the track. Kyle Busch wins the battle soundly and puts his number 18 car on the pole for the fourth time.

It may be the All Star Race but there’s still NASCAR inspections. The Team Penske number 12 car driven by Ryan Blaney and the Spire Motorsports number seven car driven by Joey LaJoie both failed the inspection process twice; as a result, they will both run the All Star Race minus the car chief.
All Star Open:
Tyler Reddick’s car had a power steering issue after qualifying. The issue has been fixed but Reddick will lose his pole position start and have to move to the back of the field for the All Star Open Race. Justin Haley’s crew also made some unapproved adjustments to the car and has to move to the back of the field.
The Open race has three stage – 20-20-10 – with the winner of each stage advancing to the main race.
Austin Dillon’s car has the same steering issue as Tyler Reddick’s car but chose not to make any repairs to the car.
Daniel Suarez bring the 16 car field down for the start of the All Star Open race and goes side by side with Ricky Stenhouse Jr before Stenhouse gets out in front for the lead.

Lap 13, also having to start from the back of the field, Justin Haley is in seventh place.

Three to go, Ricky Stenhouse Jr has led every lap so far in dominating fashion.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr wins stage one. He will take his car to the garage and prepare to run in the All Star Race.
Pit road is open and the drivers can make a normal pit stop. Taking only two tires, Daniel Suarez wins the race off of pit road. Landon Cassill also took only two tires.
Corey LaJoie was the only driver to stay out on the track.
Justin Haley was charged with having an uncontrolled tire on pit road and will have to start stage two form the back of the field.

Lap 26, Daniel Suarez has caught up to leader Corey Lajoie.
Landon Cassill gets into the wall and brings out the caution flag on lap 27. Caution laps count in the first two stages.
Corey LaJoie brings the field down for the green flag restart on lap 31 from the inside lane and goes nose to nose with Daniel Suarez in a battle for the lead. In a three wide battle, Chris Buescher comes form the inside to take the lead with Tyler Reddick behind him.
Lap 32, Chris Buescher leads the race with Daniel Suarez in second; Tyler Reddick, Corey LaJoie and Erik Jones round out the top five. Landon Cassill is out of the race.
Justin Haley is back up to seventh place.

Cole Custer had an uncontrolled tire during his pit stop and will have to restart the race from the back of the field.

Tyler Reddick spins out in front of the field on lap 43 and brings out the caution flag. Reddick gets loose and backs into the wall. Harrison Burton got caught up in the crash. Erik Jones’ grille has a bunch of grass on the car trying to avoid the crash on the track.
The caution flag laps do not count.
Daniel Suarez brings the field down for the green flag restart with eight laps to go in the Open race from the inside lane. Suarez jumps out in front for the lead with Austin Dillon in second. NASCAR is reviewing the restart.
NASCAR has said that the restart is good.

There is one more spot to fill in the All Star Race – the fan vote. The winner of the fan vote must have a car in drivable shape to compete in the All Star Race.
The winner of the 2022 All Star Fan vote is Erik Jones driving the iconic number 43 car.
All Star Race:
The All Star Race for 2022 has four stages – three of 25 laps each and one with 50 laps – for a total of 125 laps. The race also includes a mandator four tire stop.
During the break between tihe Open and the main All Star Race, award winning Country music star Blake Shelton entertained the crowd.
The pit crew that makes the fastest pit stop during the mandatory pit stop between stages two and three will win a $100,000 prize as the Pit Crew Champions.
Alex Bowman’s crew made some unapproved adjustments to the car and he will have to tart the race from the back of the field.
After a rousing command from Blake Shelton, the drivers crank the engines and get ready to start rolling down the track for the battle to win $1 million.

After leading every lap in stage one, Kyle Busch has now led over 300 All Star Race laps – the most of any driver.

Lap 31, trying to make a pass, Ryan Blaney slides up the track barely missing Ross Chastain; but he saves the car and the track stays green. Blaney falls to sixth place.
Lap 33, Kyle Busch has a lead of over half a second on Kyle Larson; Ross Chastain, William Byron, and Austin Cindric round out the top five.
Lap 36, Kyle Busch holds on to the lead. Bubba Wallace is one lap down after having to make an unscheduled trip down pit road with a loose tire.
The caution flag comes out on lap 37 when Kyle Larson blows a tire and gets into the turn four wall. Larson is out of the race. Larson said that the hit was big but he is fine.

The caution flag comes out on lap 47 when Kyle Busch gets slowed down with a flat tire. Ross Chastain comes up fast on the inside and spins Kyle Busch around, nearly flipping his car. Chastain slides up the track and slams into Chase Elliott, destroying both cars. All three drivers are out of the race. Ross Chastain was going 185mph when he hit Kyle Busch.
NASCAR displays the red flag with two laps remaining in stage two. There is a lot of fluid to be cleaned up on the track.
Austin Cindric is listed as the leader with Ryan Blaney in second; Daniel Suarez, William Byron, and Christopher Bell round out the top five.
After a red flag of over 15 minutes, NASCAR displays the yellow flag and the 20 cars on the track get moving once again.
Chase Briscoe is on pit road with the hood up.
After running a couple of laps to clear off the speedy dry, NASCAR will have a green/white/checker run to the end of the stage.
Austin Cindric brings the field down to finish out stage two from the inside lane with Ryan Blaney on the outside. Austin Cindric gets out in front for the lead but Ryan Blaney comes up on the outside to battle for the position.
Austin Cindric wins stage two and will sit on the pole for stage four if he finishes stage three in the top 15.

All of the drivers must make a four time pit stop. This is the pit stop challenge – the team with the quickest time from yellow line to yellow line earns the prize.
William Byron wins the race off of pit road but NASCAR will determine who wins the Pit Crew Challenge.

Lap 63, After starting at the back of the field with a penalty, Kurt Busch is just outside the top 10 in eleventh. Ryan Blaney has a lead of over half a second on Christopher Bell; William Byron, Daniel Suarez, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.
Lap 71, Ryan Blaney has a lead of over half a second on Christopher Bell; William Byron, Daniel Suarez, and Martin Truex Jr round out the top five.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr has a flat tire but makes it to pit road and the track stays green.
Kurt Busch is back in the top 10 in ninth.
With four laps remaining in stage three, Christopher Bell hits the wall and brings out the caution flag when he gets loose and spins out. Bell was working to close the gap on leader Ryan Blaney.
The drivers can make it to the end of the race if they make a pit stop now. Most of the drivers come down pit road for service but leader Ryan Blaney, Austin Cindric, Joey Logano, and Michael McDowell all stayed out on the track.
Once again, Bubba Wallace had a loose wheel and had to back up into his pit box to get it tightened.
Stage three will also end in overtime. Ryan Blaney brings the field down for the green flag overtime restart from the inside lane. Ryan Blaney gets out in front for the lead. Drivers get three wide across the track in a battle for position.

There are 39 laps remaining in the race; Ryan Blaney leads the race with team mates Austin Cindric and Joey Logano in second and third; Daniel Suarez and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.

If there is no “natural” caution between laps 15 and 25, NASCAR will throw the yellow flag for a competition caution.
Bubba Wallace makes another unscheduled trip down pit road with 34 laps to go for a flat tire.
With 32 laps to go, Ryan Blaney has a one second lead on Austin Cindric; Joey Logano, Daniel Suarez, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.
The caution flag comes out on lap 105 when Erik Jones gets into the wall after getting loose. Bubba Wallace is the “lucky dog” after going a lap down when he came down pit road with a flat tire.
Once pit road opens, the leaders stay out but the rest of the field comes down pit road for fresh tires.
Lap 112, Ryan Blaney brings the field down for the green flag restart from the inside lane with Austin Cindric on the outside. The top seven drivers stayed out on the track. Ryan Blaney gets out in front for the lead with Austin Cindric in second; Daniel Suarez, Joey Logano, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five.
With two fresh tires, Denny Hamlin moves into fifth place and begins his move to toward the front.

With 14 to go, Denny Hamlin passes Austin Cindric for second.
Twelve to go, Ryan Blaney has increased his lead to two second over Denny Hamlin.
Ten to go, Ryan Blaney has a lead of over two seconds on Denny Hamlin.
Nine to go, Ryan Blaney continues to increase his lead and is now two and a half seconds ahead of Denny Hamlin.
Seven to go, Ryan Blaney’s lead is now 2.75 seconds over Denny Hamlin; Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez, and Joey Logano round out the top five.
Five to go, Ryan Blaney has a lead of nearly three seconds on Denny Hamlin.
Joey Logano passes Daniel Suarez for fourth.
Two to go, Ryan Blaney has a three second lead on Denny Hamlin.

The race must end under green flag conditions. Ricky Stenhouse Jr brought out the caution flag when he gets into the wall. NASCAR throws the caution flag just before Blaney crosses the finish line. The race is NOT over!
Ryan Blaney had already pulled down the window net thinking that he had won the race and is now having trouble getting it back up. Blaney reports that he cannot get the window net back up.
The race goes into overtime.
A few drivers come down pit road before the overtime green flag.
Lap 139 (originally scheduled for 125), Ryan Blaney brings the field down for the overtime shootout from the inside lane with Denny Hamlin on the outside. Getting a push from team mate Austin Cindric, Ryan Blaney takes the elad as drivers get three wide.
Ryan Blaney holds off the field and takes the white flag. Austin Cindric and Denny Hamlin battle for second.
Ryan Blaney wins the All Star Race…and the million dollars!
Blaney thanked NASCAR for letting him somewhat fix the window net and not make him come down pit road.
