Due to the lockout, the Major League Baseball season got a bit of a late start this season. While the new contract may bring a few changes to the game – bigger bases, pitch clock, etc. -. One of the most notable changes is the universal designated hitter.

The rosters are being expanded from 26 to 28 players with a maximum of 14 pitchers and the “ghost runner” returns in extra innings. The changes are in effect until May 1.
The “ghost runner” puts a runner on second base at the beginning of each inning. The “ghost runner” is the player who made the last out in the previous inning.
