The on ice portion of the Russian sweep and doping issue of the women’s figure skating competition came down to an anti-climatic finish after expected star – Kamila Valieva – fell twice during her free skate.  But the competition was not without some controversy when second place skater Alexandra Trusova was outraged when she didn’t take the gold after performing five quads.

Russian skater Anna Shcherbakova won the gold with Trusova taking the silver and Japan’s Kaori Sakamato getting the bronze.  Valieva finished in fourth.

In the women’s combined alpine skiing event, Michelle Gisin of Switzerland successfully defended her gold medal by earning a second gold medal.  American Mikaela Shiffrin failed to complete the race for her third DNF of these Olympic games.

With Gisin’s win, Switzerland now has a record setting five gold medals in a single Olympic games.

In the women’s freestyle skicross, Sweden’s Sandra Naeslund added an Olympic gold medal to her world championship.

Fanny Smith of Switzerland was originally listed as the third place finisher but after a review it was determined that she placed a ski in the path of Germany’s Daniela Maier and was disqualified.  Maier is the bronze medal winner.

In the women’s gold medal hockey game, Canada beat the United States 3-2 to take the gold for their fifth Olympic gold medal.  It is the fourth silver medal in the event for the American women.

In the Team Gundersen Large Hill/4 X 5k cross country event, Norway won the event in commanding fashion even with the loss of skiing star Jarl Magnus Riiber who had tested positive for Covid.

In the women’s 1,000 meter speedskating event, Japan’s Miho Takagi won her fourth medal of the Beijing Olympics.  It was her first gold medal in her skating career with a record setting time of 13.19 seconds.  America’s Brittany Bowe won the bronze medal.

Norway continues to lead the gold medal count with 14 and the overall medal count with 29.
