As the first full week of competition begins at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China; there is plenty of competition on the ice and on the slopes.
On February 7 several more medals were handed down including the delayed men’s down skiing events which came a day late due to bad weather.
In the men’s downhill event Switzerland’s Beat Feuz took the gold. Frenchman Johan Clarey set a record for being the oldest man to win an Olympic medal at age 41. He beat out American Bodie Miller to set the record.
The women’s giant slalom saw several skiers go down in the first round. Sweden’s Sara Hector held on to take the gold medal.
In the women’s 15k individual biathlon, Germany’s Denise Hermann missed only one shot on her way to winning the gold medal.
The team figure skating event concluded on with a dominating run by the Russian Olympic Committee team that included 15 year old Kamila Valieva who became the first female skater to successfully perform a quadruple jump. She completed two of the jumps before falling on the third.
The United States added to their collection of silver medals.
In the mixed team ski jumping competition Slovenia won the gold medal.
In the men’s slopestyle snowboard event, Canadian Max Parrott won the gold medal.
In the women’s 500 meter short track speedskating event, Italy’s Arianna Fontana added to her impressive list of medals with another gold to bring her total to nine. She was also on the silver medal winning mixed relay team.
In the men’s 1,000 meter speedskating even, host country China earned the gold with Ren Ziwei being awarded the gold after Hungary’s Liu Shaolin Sandor was penalized twice and given a yellow card. Officials handed the penalty down to Liu despite the fact that Ren grabbed Liu as they approached the finish line.
In the women’s 1,500 meters race, Dutch skater Ireen Wüst added to her collection of Olympic medals with another gold. Wüst has a total of 12 Olympic medals – half of them gold – to become the most decorated speedskater in the Netherlands.
Switzerland added their name to the list of medal winners when Beat Fuez took the gold medal in downhill skiing.
Sweden takes over the lead in gold medals with three, but it is the ROC who holds the overall lead with a total of seven medals.
