Last weekend the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona celebrated their 60th anniversary with six grand marshals – all former race winners.  This weekend, NASCAR will celebrate the first Busch Light Clash in Los Angeles with a six pack of grand marshals of their own.

Earlier in the week, NFL star Eric Dickerson and MLB pitcher Jim Abbot were named as grand marshals.  More grand marshals have been named – all athletes.

As a member of the Los Angeles Rams, Dickerson has spent a good bit of time on the playing field of the Memorial Coliseum.

Abbott, who is excited to see his first NASCAR short track race, spent his career on the baseball diamond.

The only female in the group, retired professional beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor dominated the sand with team mate Kerri Walsh Jennings.  Along the way they earned three Olympic gold medals and over 100 championships.  Speaking on being named as one of the grand marshals May-Trainor said, “I am so humbled and honored to be one of the grand marshals for this unique and historic event.  I am so excited. I can’t wait for the speed, I can’t wait for the adrenaline rush, I can’t wait for the sounds of the crowd.”

NFL player Greg Townsend spent most of his career as a member of the Los Angeles Raiders and was a member of the 1984 Super Bowl winning team.  Townsend also spent one year with the Philadelphia Eagles.

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the latest athletes to be named as one of the grand marshals for The Clash.  Earning five NBA championships as a Los Angeles Laker, Jabbar is a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame,a six time MVP, and 19 time All Star.  “The NASCAR Clash at the Coliseum is going to be very special and unique.  So I have to be there and I can’t wait,” said Jabbar.

And finally, NASCAR Hall of Fame driver and current vice chairman at Hendrick Motorsports Jeff Gordon is the lone motorsports grand marshal.  Gordon notched 93 race wins during his 23 season career.  A California native, Gordon took home the Daytona 500 trophy three times and earned the Cup Series championship four times.  An enthusiastic Gordon noted, “I think the fans are going to blown away. I know I can’t wait to see what happens on track and all the action.”

DJ Skee, Ice Cube, and Pitbull will be providing the entertainment during the packed weekend of fun and racing.

With three days remaining before the big event, NASCAR is sure to add to the star studded list appearing for The Clash.
