There are less than 60 days until the beginning of the 2022 NASCAR season with The Clash in Los Angeles.

This week, NASCAR continued to sponsor testing in the Cup Series’ Next Gen car.

With time quickly approaching the beginning of a new season and with that NASCAR has turned their attention toward setting up the parameters for the cars during the various races.

NASCAR officials has indicated that the target output for the engines will be 670 horsepower for most of the tra ks on the circuit.

NASCAR executive vice president Steve O’Donnell spoke on the decision saying, “I would say we’re more than likely going with that number across all of our tracks.  We’ve still got a few boxes to check post tests here where we get together with our (OEMs, original equipment manufacturers) and the teams and just confirm that’s the direction we want to go with. But everything we’ve seen so far, that tells us and that’s the horsepower we want to target and go with.”  O’Connell added that there would be a separate horsepower package for the superspeedways of Daytona and Talladega.  After a test at Atlanta Motor Speedway next week where banking is being adjusted to a steeper angle may also be added to the superspeedway configuration.

During the past two days of testing, NASCAR had the teams test a number of different setup packages to help determine what would work best to ensure a good race and ensure safety on the track.

Noting that they needed to give the car a bit more forward downforce, NASCAR managing director of aerodynamics and vehicle performance Dr. Eric Jacuzzi said, “it seems like now that the car’s a little happier, better behaved at different ride heights, I think we’re pretty comfortable with where we’re at. It seems like product-wise, we feel pretty good.”

While more testing is scheduled all the way to just before the start of the season, NASCAR officials believes that most of the configurations for the cars are set.
