As the Tokyo Paralympics approaches it’s first full week of competitions 69 different nations have earned medals.
During the opening ceremonies when the nations paraded into the stadium, only the banner naming the country of Afghanistan was present. Due to events in the country, the two athletes set to compete could not get out of the country. With the help of others and travel through a few nations, the two athletes have made their way to Japan and will be a part of The Games.
This year the Olympics and the Paralympics has been one for the record books with nations earning their first ever medals…including their first taste of gold.
The People’s Republic of China continues to lead the medal count for gold with 46. China is also the first country to break the 100 medal total with 104.
The United States moves up to tie for third with the RPC with 15 gold medals. The Americans have earned a total of 40 medals thus far.
